Get ready for an eye-opening and inspiring journey through the Sierra Nevada forests with John Mount, a seasoned expert in forest restoration and the author of two compelling books: Torching Conventional Forestry and Our Forests Have Been Loved to Death. With over 50 years of experience managing land in the Sierra Nevada Forest, John Mount brings a wealth of knowledge about the challenges and opportunities facing our forests today. John's presentation will be at the Museum of the Sierra on the afternoon of October 12th, at 1PM.
This is not just another talk - it's a call to action!
If you’ve had the pleasure of meeting John Mount here at The Orchard on a Friday or Saturday morning, then you already know how passionate and knowledgeable he is about our forests. Now is your chance to hear him speak in-depth for a full hour about the future of our forests and what we can do to protect them. John’s insights come from decades of hands-on experience in the Sierra Nevada, and his dedication to restoring these landscapes is truly inspiring. Don’t miss this opportunity to dive deep into the subject and learn directly from one of the most informed voices in forest restoration.
John Mount’s presentation, Our Forest, Our Choice, will take you deep into the history of our forests and the drastic changes they’ve endured over the last century. Did you know that the Creek Fire alone devastated nearly 400,000 acres of forest habitat? And that's not all - since the early 1900s, an additional 100,000 acres of forest have been lost, with little to no replacement efforts. As a result, thousands of wildlife species have disappeared due to the loss of their homes.
But here's the big question: What can we do about it? In this engaging program, John will explore the critical steps we can take to correct these past mistakes and restore our ecosystems. This isn't just about facts and figures - it's about the future of our forests and the role we all play in shaping it.
What will our forests look like in 10, 20, or even 100 years?
Will bird populations recover?
Can we expect more catastrophic fires in the future?
Are efforts to replant seedlings a hopeful start or too little, too late?
How many trees will it take to restore the areas devastated by the Creek Fire?
These are big, thought-provoking questions, and the answers are even bigger. John Mount's presentation will take you beyond the headlines and give you a deeper understanding of the forest’s future - and your role in it.
What makes this presentation truly exciting is John’s deep connection to the Sierra Nevada forests. His passion for sustainable land management has been shaped by decades of hands-on experience, and his books have challenged traditional approaches to forestry. He’s been at the forefront of advocacy for restoring balance to our ecosystems, and now he’s here to share that knowledge with you.
If you’ve ever felt a sense of helplessness about the state of our forests, this program will offer hope - and a clear path forward. Restoring our forests isn’t just the job of forestry professionals - it’s a community effort. John emphasizes that it takes a village to repair and protect our forests for future generations. Through replanting efforts, wildlife habitat restoration, and preventative measures against future fires, there is still a chance to save what’s left of our beautiful Sierra Nevada forests.
We’re thrilled to announce that Walt Page, grandson of John Mount, will also be joining us at the Museum of the Sierra to lend his support and provide even more context to John’s talk. Walt is no stranger to the forests of the Sierra Nevada - he grew up in Tollhouse, California, and has turned his passion for the outdoors into a full-time career as a Forester for Southern California Edison. But Walt isn’t just a forest expert; he’s also a world-class lumberjack superstar. After graduating from Cal Poly’s College of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Sciences in 2012, Walt competed with the Cal Poly Logging Team, discovering a love for wood-chopping events that has since taken him to international competitions.
Walt's skills as a Timbersports athlete have earned him recognition worldwide, making him a true champion of sustainable forestry. His firsthand experience in timber felling and his deep connection to these landscapes will bring an extra layer of insight and expertise to John Mount’s presentation. Don’t miss the chance to hear from two generations of forestry experts!
