The Allure of the Arkansas Black: A Story as Rich as Its Flavor

Picture this: It's the mid-1800s in the rolling Ozarks of Benton County, Arkansas, where a chance seedling - likely a descendant of the beloved Winesap - takes root in a humble orchard. Discovered around 1870, the Arkansas Black apple quickly became a regional sensation, gracing up to 20% of the state's apple harvest in its heyday during the early 1900s. But life's twists - droughts, pests, and the Great Depression - nearly whispered it into obscurity.

Today, this heirloom gem makes up just a whisper of production, cherished by apple aficionados and chefs for its rarity and resilience. It's a testament to the enduring spirit of the land, much like the sturdy trees that cling to our own Sierra slopes.

What makes the Arkansas Black so utterly special? Oh, where to begin!

These petite-to-medium orbs arrive with a skin so dramatically deep - starting as a vibrant burgundy and ripening to an almost mystical near-black hue - that they look like they've been dipped in midnight velvet. That thick, waxy exterior isn't just for show; it's a natural fortress, locking in freshness and allowing these apples to "age" like a fine wine in storage, developing layers of flavor over months without losing their snap. Fresh off the tree, they're a bold tart kick, crisp as fresh snow with a firm, juicy bite that demands respect.

But give them a week or two to mellow, and magic happens: the sharpness softens into a symphony of subtle sweetness, laced with whispers of vanilla, almond, cherry, and even a hint of red wine - complex, aromatic, and utterly addictive. Known as one of the best "keeper" apples, they can last through winter in a cool spot, turning every bite into a cozy reminder of fall's bounty. Whether you're nibbling them out of hand, baking them into spiced pies, or pressing them into velvety cider (they're legendary for that!), the Arkansas Black isn't just fruit - it's an experience, a flavorful hug from history itself.

And here's the cherry (or should we say, black apple?) on top: this season, we're offering these treasures at an unbeatable $5 per pound. In a world where heirloom delights like these often command premium prices, this is your golden ticket to indulgence without the splurge. It's our way of saying thank you for being part of our farm family - sharing these rare gems at a price that lets you stock up, share with loved ones, and savor the season without a second thought. At $5 a pound, you're not just getting apples; you're investing in pure joy, one crisp crunch at a time.

Fresh from the Orchard: Ready for You This Thursday

Our Arkansas Black apples will be lovingly hand-picked by our experienced team, who know these trees like old friends - spotting the ripest fruit under the autumn sun and treating each one with the care it deserves. Back at the farm, they'll be gently washed, meticulously sorted for perfection, and packed with pride, ensuring you take home the very best of what our Sierra soil has to offer. They'll be waiting for you in the cozy apple shed (right next to the farm store), ready for purchase starting at 11 a.m. this Thursday. Swing by early, coffee in hand,, and let the anticipation build - there's nothing quite like the first glimpse of that inky skin gleaming in the light.

We have to be honest, though: these fan favorites won't linger long. With the season winding down, we expect to be completely out of apples by the end of the weekend. So, don't wait - make this your call to adventure! Come early, wander the orchard paths, and fill your arms with the last of our harvest.

While you're here, why not join us for a soul-soothing yoga class in the orchard? Our sessions with Jenni Dallis at 10 a.m., 12:30 p.m., or 4 p.m. (weather permitting) are the perfect way to stretch into the day amid the rustling leaves and mountain vistas. Afterward, retreat to the farm store for a steaming mug of our secret-stash hot cider (served by the cup, just how you like it) or rich hot cocoa (with marshmallows) - perhaps paired with a fresh pastry to chase away the chill. It's all wrapped in that warm, woodsy glow that makes these moments feel like home.

The Season's Not Over - It's Just Getting Cozier

And here's the best part: we don't close up shop until there's a heavy snow blanketing the ground, so there's still plenty of magic to uncover in the weeks ahead. Bundle up and come capture those picture-perfect shots of frost-kissed trees against the Sierra skyline, or simply breathe in the fresh mountain air that clears the soul like nothing else. Our artists are always fluttering about - setting up easels in hidden corners or sharing their crafty secrets - so pull up a stool, chat over cider, and who knows? You might leave with a handmade treasure or a new inspiration of your own.

Weather allowing, expect delightful surprises popping up like hidden gems: new artists, seasonal crafts, and impromptu gatherings that turn ordinary visits into cherished memories. It's our favorite time of year - the quiet hush before the snow, when the farm feels like a warm lantern in the twilight, inviting you to linger, laugh, and let the world slow down.

We can't wait to see your smiling faces this Thursday (and beyond!). Grab your layers, your camera, and your sense of wonder - the Arkansas Black apple trees (and all of us here) are rooting for you. ;)

With apple-scented warmth and open arms,

Your Meadow Lakes Orchard Family
